What this license covers

This license applies to everything on gcwire.pages.dev: the news stories, riddles, forum, city map, and the site's design and code. By using the site or creating an account, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

The Wire is a fan project made for fun. It is not a business, doesn't charge anyone, and isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by DC Comics, Warner Bros. Discovery or any real news organization or government.

Who owns what

DC characters, places and names

Gotham City, its districts, Batman, the GCPD, Arkham and every other DC character, location and name belong to DC Comics and Warner Bros. Discovery. The Wire uses them as a fan tribute. We don't own them and we can't give you any rights to them. This license only covers what the Wire itself created.

Original Wire content

The Wire's own writing (news stories, riddles, map district files, ticker lines, the "Leak of the Week" and other original text), along with the site's layout, visual design, graphics and code, is owned by Gotham City Wire. What you may do with it is set out below.

Your content

Anything you write on the Wire, such as forum posts, comments, riddle guesses and your profile bio, stays yours. You only give the Wire the limited permission described in Your posts and contributions.

What you may do

As long as you follow the conditions in this section, you may:

  • Read and browse every public page, for free, as often as you like.
  • Link to any page, including individual forum threads and stories, from anywhere.
  • Quote short excerpts (a few sentences, not the bulk of a piece) in your own posts, articles, videos or discussions, as long as you name Gotham City Wire and, where possible, link to the original page.
  • Share screenshots of the site on social media or elsewhere, as long as it stays clear they came from the Wire and you don't edit them to change what was said.
  • Make fan works such as fan fiction, art, comics, audio or videos inspired by Wire stories, riddles or map files, as long as they're non-commercial and credit the Wire as the inspiration.
  • Review, criticize or react to the Wire in any format, including quoting it for commentary.
  • Save or print pages for your own personal, offline reading.
  • Repost your own contributions (your own posts, comments and bio) anywhere you want. They're yours.
  • Look at the page source to learn how something was built, and use small, general techniques from it in your own projects.

These permissions are free, non-exclusive and can't be transferred, and they last as long as you follow this license.

What you may not do

With Wire content

  • Republish in full. Don't copy whole stories, riddles, map files or pages onto another site, app, feed or document, and don't run a mirror or archive of the Wire.
  • Make money from it. Don't sell Wire content, put it on merchandise, use it in paid products or courses, or repost it on ad-supported pages or monetized channels where the Wire's material is the main attraction.
  • Remove credit or claim authorship. Don't present Wire content as your own work, and don't strip out the credit when you quote or share it.
  • Pretend it's official or real. Don't present Wire content as official DC or Warner Bros. material, or as real news, real police information or real statements from any real person or organization.
  • Edit it to mislead. Don't alter screenshots or quotes so the Wire or its members appear to have said something they didn't.
  • Copy the site. Don't copy the Wire's design, layout or code wholesale to build a lookalike site, and don't use the Gotham City Wire name or logo in a way that suggests we run or endorse your project.
  • Frame it. Don't embed Wire pages inside another site in a way that hides that you're looking at the Wire.

With the site itself

  • Scrape or bulk-download. Don't use bots, scripts or crawlers to collect content or member data, beyond what normal search engines do when indexing public pages.
  • Train AI on it. Don't use Wire content or members' posts to train, fine-tune or build datasets for AI or machine-learning models.
  • Break in or break things. Don't probe for or exploit security holes, access or change data you aren't meant to, get into anyone else's account, or query the site's database directly to get around the normal pages.
  • Overload the site. Don't flood it with requests, automated posts or anything else that could slow it down or take it offline.

Your posts and contributions

You keep ownership of everything you post. By posting it on the Wire, you give Gotham City Wire a free, non-exclusive, worldwide permission to store, display and format it on the site. That includes featuring it in places like Popular Forum Threads and Today's Topic on the home page, for as long as it stays on the Wire.

  • Deleting ends that permission. Once you delete something, the Wire stops showing it. Copies that other people made under this license (for example, a short quote in someone else's post) may remain.
  • Other members can quote you in the same way this license lets anyone quote the Wire: short excerpts, with credit.
  • Only post what you have the right to post. Don't upload or paste other people's writing, art or other work unless you made it, have permission, or are quoting a short excerpt with credit.
  • Public means public. Your username, bio and posts can be seen by anyone who visits the site, including people without an account.

Community rules

The Wire is a shared piece of fiction. Stay in character as much as you like, but these real-world rules always apply:

  • Keep threats fictional. No threats, harassment or bullying aimed at real people, including other members.
  • No hate. No content attacking people for their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age.
  • No doxxing. Never post anyone's real name, address, phone number, workplace, photos or other personal details without their permission. That includes your own if you'd regret it later.
  • Nothing illegal or sexually explicit. Don't post illegal content, links to it, or sexually explicit material of any kind.
  • No spam or advertising. Don't post repeated, off-topic or promotional content. Businesses and projects that want exposure should use the Advertise page.
  • Don't impersonate staff or members. Only Wire staff carry the [WIRE STAFF] tag. Don't pose as staff or as another member.
  • Play fair. Don't use multiple accounts, bots or coordinated posting to push threads up the popularity rankings or to game the riddle.
  • Label spoilers. Mark spoilers for recent comics, films, shows and games in your post titles.

In-universe rules. When you registered, you also agreed to the Wire's in-world code of conduct. Citizens of Gotham must not:

  • post classified GCPD material,
  • incite panic,
  • impersonate public officials, or
  • reveal active vigilante locations.

These are part of the fiction and are enforced with a wink. The real-world rules above are not.

Accounts

  • One person, one account. Your account is personal. Don't share it or sell it.
  • Keep your password safe. You're responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has access, change your password right away.
  • Choose a suitable username. Usernames that are offensive, impersonate someone or break the community rules may be changed or removed.
  • Use a real email address. It's needed to verify your account before you can log in.

Moderation and enforcement

Wire staff keep the site running and the forum readable. To do that, staff may:

  • hide, edit (for example, to remove personal details) or delete posts, comments and bios that break this license,
  • temporarily or permanently suspend accounts that break the rules, especially for repeated or serious violations, and
  • remove any content at any time if it puts the site, its members or the project at risk.

The Wire is a free fan project, so we're not obliged to host any particular content, and we may change or shut down features, or the whole site, at any time.

Takedown requests

If you own the rights to something posted on the Wire and want it removed, or you're a rights holder with concerns about how the Wire uses your characters or material, contact Wire staff. Tell us which page or post it is and why you're asking. We'll review every request and remove material promptly where appropriate.

The same applies if a post contains your personal information: tell us where it is and we'll take it down.

Fiction and no warranty

Everything on the Wire, including news stories, scanner feeds, sightings, leaks, map files and forum posts, is fiction or fan discussion. None of it is real news, real police information or advice of any kind.

The site is provided as it is, without any guarantee that it will always be available, error-free or secure. Members' posts are their own views, not the Wire's. As far as the law allows, Gotham City Wire isn't responsible for losses caused by using the site or relying on anything posted on it.

Third-party credits

The Wire relies on a few outside services and resources, which have their own terms:

  • Weather in the top bar is real data from Open-Meteo.com, provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
  • Accounts, forum and riddle data are stored using Supabase.
  • The Share Tech Mono typeface is used under the SIL Open Font License.

Changes to this license

We may update this license as the Wire grows. When we do, we'll change the "Last revised" date at the top of the full terms. If you keep using the site after a change, you accept the updated version. Anything you posted before a change stays covered by the permission you gave when you posted it, unless you agree otherwise.
